“The current plan to expand I-35 is unacceptable. I-35 has been a scar on our city for decades and has been a historical dividing line between East and West Austin. Adding more lanes won't ease congestion, it will only increase reliance on cars. The I-35 redesign is a once in a multigenerational opportunity, and we can and must do better than what we have before us. I want the best possible plan that is looking at the future of transportation and that serves Austin generations from now. We must embrace a vision that incentivizes multimodal transit and that creates meaningful connections between East and West Austin, buries and caps central Austin, and does not widen the highway. Every transportation dollar we spend should be an equity dollar, and I do not see that in the current I-35 plan.”
